The company needs to restore and repair its severely damaged launch facility in southern Texas before trying to launch its giant Starship rocket into orbit once more.
It’s uncertain whether the design adjustments SpaceX is considering will be adequate. A nearby park caught fire during the April 20 launch attempt, which also completely demolished the building beneath the launchpad and threw sand, concrete, and steel fragments thousands of feet into the air.
The company is including a new feature: a pair of enormous steel plates with pressurized water to assist mitigate the effects of up to 33 Raptor engines igniting during takeoff. This will help prevent debris from being thrown everywhere on each subsequent flight.
Experts in the field are unsure whether or not that will be sufficient to stop another “rock tornado,” as Chief Executive Elon Musk dubbed the destructive combination of power, heat, and gas that created a massive crater beneath Starship.
Building some form of flame trench—an extended, typically V-shaped conduit that aids in rerouting the powerful energy and gas away from the launchpad and the rocket itself—has long been considered the gold standard in the launch industry when it comes to fire diversion and dampening measures. It’s a fairly common infrastructure for almost any orbital rocket nowadays, including rockets launched by SpaceX, and is typically utilized in conjunction with a water-deluge system.
George Sowers, a mechanical engineering professor at the Colorado School of Mines who has previously worked with Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin, and United Launch Alliance, stated that it “sort of amazes me” that they didn’t apply the procedures that the launch business has developed over decades.
When a rocket is lit, scientists have to take into account a number of variables that could harm the rocket and its surroundings. Engine heat is the most visible one. The engines’ enhanced acoustics also produce a lot of energy in the form of sound, which is another factor. Fast-moving gas plumes produced by the engines are a third problem that is frequently ignored.
According to Tory Bruno, CEO of United Launch Alliance, one of SpaceX’s rivals, “it is thousands and thousands of pounds per second impacting on that concrete.”
The debris from the test launch was likely caused by gases produced by Starship, according to Sowers. A raised launch mount, which looked like a giant milk stool and was placed over a slab of concrete, was used to launch the rocket.
