The Tesla Semi has generated a great deal of interest, skepticism, and expectation ever since it was first announced in 2017. Due to a shortage of 4680 battery cells, commercial production was discovered to be postponed until 2022 in 2021. Elon Musk has disclosed that Tesla intends to create up to 50,000 copies each year in 2024, since that customers have started to get their deliveries as of December of last year. PepsiCo has held a reservation for the Tesla Semi for a very long time and was one of the first receivers. With one of the largest fleets in North America, the business tycoon is now leading the way in the transition to electric trucking thanks to its collaboration with the Texas-based EV manufacturer.
However, there is a cost associated with this choice. The price of the Tesla Semi, which is available in two configurations (300 miles and 500 miles), is anticipated to be up to $180,000, or up to twice the cost of a diesel-powered truck. The EV truck’s decreased maintenance costs, which Elon Musk claims to be up to 20% lower, may easily make up for this gap.
We like to diversify our portfolio of solutions, according to Mike O’Connell, VP Supply Chain at PepsiCo, in an interview with CNBC. “Diesel vehicle storage tanks are cheaper, and the fuel is more expensive. Electricity is more accessible. Batteries are more expensive. There’s always a constant dynamic between those two. So, in the midst of all the hoopla and uncertainty, we pause to consider: Is the Tesla Semi a viable alternative?
The Tesla Semi’s powerful front displays the characteristics of its creator. The front’s lengthened shape improves aerodynamics and lessens pressure buildup. With two 15-inch touch screens on either side, the interior of the cabin has been designed with the driver in mind, making it difficult to keep your eyes on the road. Several truckers have opposed this allegedly futuristic method, claiming that the setting impairs their peripheral vision and prevents them from using the side-view mirrors. Musk referred to the inside as a “day cabin” as opposed to a “sleeper cabin,” although removing the bed in favor of a closet corridor is not ideal.
Contrary to truckers in the EU, who must rest for 45 minutes after four and a half hours of driving, US traffic laws compel drivers to take a 30-minute break after eight hours of nonstop driving. A coat hanger would undoubtedly be much less useful for these situations, one could easily say. The cockpit, however, deserves respect for its roomy design because it provides enough space for a six-footer to walk around without feeling cramped.
When compared to its diesel-powered competitors, the electric monster offers next-level performance. The Semi can quietly race from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds and has been observed on the highway passing other vehicles with impressive skill.
