Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, admitted on Friday that he refused to accede to a last-minute request from the authorities to activate the space internet service Starlink up to Sevastopol in Crimea, a significant port on the Black Sea, in order to target Russian ships. According to extracts from a new biography, Elon Musk cut back on his Starlink satellite service last year to stop Ukraine from using it to launch a sea drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea. He was concerned that the action would lead to a mini-Pearl Harbour or perhaps nuclear retaliation.
“How am I in this war?’’ The book’s author, Walter Isaacson, is rumoured to have asked him. Musk is engaged in this conflict as a result of the correct thing he did 19 months ago, which makes the question well-founded and has a simple answer.
One of the first actions taken by the advancing Russian force in February 2022 when it invaded its neighbour was to disable the Ukrainian army’s communications infrastructure. The richest guy in the world was sought out by the administration in Kiev because he was presumably the only person on the earth who could offer a solution quickly and on a large scale.
By this point, Musk has become such a controversial tech billionaire that he doesn’t always receive the credit he is due for stepping up then or for the manner he followed through on his Starlink donations to make the civilian system functional during times of conflict. The outcome of Ukraine’s struggle for existence might have been very different if not for his satellites and batteries.
However, none of it qualifies Musk as an expert in international affairs, an expert diplomat, or the ideal candidate to be deciding Ukraine’s military strategy.
Musk indicated in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that he didn’t terminate Starlink’s service, as recounted, but instead declined a request to extend it to Crimea for the attack. This was in response to Isaacson’s version of the episode, which Musk has updated in one place. He hasn’t disputed the accuracy of the report in any other way, though.
“There was an emergency request from government authorities to activate Starlink all the way to Sevastopol.
The obvious intent being to sink most of the Russian fleet at anchor.
If I had agreed to their request, then SpaceX would be explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation.”
SpaceX did not disable anything, and neither were the disputed Starlink regions, according to Musk. The billionaire posted, “Both sides should agree to a truce. Every day that goes by, more Ukrainian and Russian youth perish for the sake of gaining and losing inconsequential amounts of land, with borders barely shifting. This is not worth their lives.”
As hundreds of children continue to perish on both sides, he also urged Russia and Ukraine to agree to a cease-fire.
