Environmentalists were excited by Elon Musk’s goal for Tesla in a 2006 manifesto, written before he became the company’s CEO and the only decision-maker: reduce carbon pollution with electric vehicles, starting with a costly, open-top sports car and moving on to more affordable family models that, perhaps would be powered by the sun. His sales pitch for the large, blocky Cybertruck, which is anticipated to be on sale in the upcoming weeks, was made seventeen years later and has nothing to do with the global warming crisis.
On a company website, it boasts that “Cybertruck is built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection.” Tesla also states that the heavy EV can “pull near infinite mass,” despite the fact that “clearly no vehicle, not even a Class-8 semi, can pull infinite mass,” according to Ed Kim, president of industry researcher AutoPacific. “Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin to Tesla armour glass.”
On the website, there are no mentions of any environmental advantages, as well as no information on the Cybertruck’s release date, cost, weight, or range on a single charge. Musk recently pledged that the truck would be released this year, stating that it “is no small car.” In addition, he stated without providing any further information that demand for it is “so out of the hook you can’t even see the hook.”
Tesla also declined to disclose the number of customers who paid the $100 reservation fee, but fansites estimate that more than 1.5 million have done so since the truck’s November 2019 premiere (where design chief Franz von Holzhausen humiliatingly destroyed the truck’s supposedly indestructible armour glass with heavy metal balls). One thing is certain, however: environmentalists despise it. It is unclear how well it will sell.
Dan Becker, director of the Centre for Biological Diversity’s Safe Climate Transport Campaign, told Forbes that the Cybertruck is plagued by the same faulty reasoning that affects the Hummer EV. I don’t belong to the group of folks who have been applauding. The absence of it would actually make me joyful.
The eccentric billionaire’s push into trucks has less to do with protecting the environment than it does with the fact that this sector of the U.S. auto market is the largest and most lucrative. About 2 million pickup trucks were purchased by Americans last year, with an average price of $59,000. Therefore, if Tesla were to sell at least 100,000 Cybertrucks each year for $60,000 or more, the business might generate an additional $6 billion in revenue each year, providing it succeeds in selling the product. However, this figure may be optimistic.
