SpaceX has launched its rockets more than 70 times so far this year, or approximately once every four days. This extraordinary rate has completely changed the industry. However, company officials say they are worried that the government is not keeping up and is hindering NASA’s capacity to send astronauts back to the moon as the company continues to drastically boost that flight rate and is ready for another test launch with its enormous Starship rocket.
The Washington Post reported that SpaceX executive William Gerstenmaier, the company’s vice president for build and reliability, intended to press that point at a Senate hearing scheduled for Wednesday. He intended to urge Congress to streamline regulations and increase the number of Federal Aviation Administration staffers who are specifically dedicated to issuing space launch licenses.
“With the flight rates that are increasing, with the other players that are coming on board, we see there’s potentially a big industry problem coming where the pace of government is not going to be able to keep up with the pace of development on the private-sector side,” Gerstenmaier said prior to giving his testimony before the Senate Commerce subcommittee on space and science at a hearing titled, “Promoting Safety, Innovation, and Competitiveness in U.S. Commercial Human Spaceflight.”
The most powerful rocket ever constructed had to be destroyed by its onboard flight termination system shortly after Starship’s April first flight attempt came to an end as it began to tumble uncontrollably. The launch site’s remote location in South Texas was completely damaged by the force of the launch, which was propelled by 33 engines. Rocks and other debris were also flung across the area. Despite the fact that no one was hurt, the FAA nevertheless commissioned an inquiry, which was completed last month and called for SpaceX to carry out 63 corrective steps. In Musk’s words, the business finished all the steps necessary for a license.
Environmental organizations concerned about the effects Starship would have on the area filed a lawsuit in response to the launch attempt.
Before SpaceX can fly Starship once more, it needs to have a license from the FAA “that addresses all safety, environmental, and other regulatory requirements,” the FAA stated in a statement last month. By the end of October, the FAA hopes to have finished reviewing the license application’s safety.
However, the FAA also stated that the corporation must abide by a separate environmental review procedure it is carrying out with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. An FAA official recently told The Post that the FAA’s engagement with Fish and Wildlife will now reportedly go into November.
Officials from SpaceX told The Washington Post that they spent two years trying to get the first Starship launch license and have been waiting months for the second.
