Elon Musk CONFIRMS Below $25k Tesla Car: “We DON’T Have A Choice”

According to Walter Isaacson, Elon Musk’s biographer, Tesla’s execs were able to convince the CEO to work on a cheap electric car that would cost less than $25,000. This was despite Musk’s best efforts to waste all of Tesla’s resources on an inefficient project. If rules and software are made to match Musk’s vision, this car could become a robotaxi in the future.
Isaacson says that one reason Tesla’s much-talked-about sub-$25,000 small electric vehicle, which is sometimes called the Model 2, was delayed was because Musk was sure that that world would have millions of robotaxis, so there would be no need for the car.
The idea of an electric car that drives itself and has “no mirrors, no pedals, no steering wheel” excited Musk, who insisted that Tesla would “take that risk.” Walter Isaacson’s new book Elon Musk, which was released by Axios, includes the quote “It’s my fault if it f–ks up.” “No, we’re not going to make some kind of frog that can swim and drive that way.” Self-government is something we all support.
Isaacson says that for weeks after that meeting in 2021, Musk was excited about the idea of a fully autonomous car. It will change everything, he said. “This will be a historically mega-revolutionary product.”
Musk’s leaders had to walk on eggshells and try to convince him of the flaws in Musk’s plan in a “non-challenging way.”
Leading executive at Tesla, Lars Moravy, told Isaacson, “We gave him new information that he might not have fully absorbed in the summer.” In his speech, he said that autonomous vehicles would not be approved by U.S. regulators for a long time, and that it would likely take even longer in other countries. To find a middle ground, executives suggested making a car with easy-to-remove steering and pedals once rules allowed it.
Although Musk wasn’t excited about the idea of a cheap small car with a steering wheel, he blocked the plan from 2020 to 2022, saying that a robotaxi would make it useless. However, Tesla may make 700 million compact cars by 2030, which is almost twice as many as the Model 3/Y, according to sources inside the company.
Even so, Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s head of design, kept the project going by suggesting that the platform for the car could also be used for a driverless vehicle.
