Elon Musk Just BUILT A 2nd Crew Launch Tower!
Earlier this year, SpaceX started constructing a backup launch pad for its Dragon cargo and crew spaceship, and the site is now operational ready. What was the purpose of SpaceX’s second crew launch tower? Come along and discover all the latest news in Boca Chica! So stay tuned!

These intentions were initially made public by Reuters in June 2022. They started when SpaceX was allegedly informed by NASA that the agency was concerned that the company’s first Florida Starship launch site, which is situated near the only pad that can presently launch SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, would pose an excessive amount of risk. NASA and SpaceX announced in September 2022 that they had agreed to move forward with the plans to upgrade LC-40 for Dragon launches.
SpaceX and NASA have given another news conference update four months later. According to officials, work has already begun in part and LC-40 might be prepared to handle its first Dragon launch in less than a year.
Since 2020, NASA has practically solely relied on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon to launch its people to the International Space Station (ISS) because Boeing’s equivalent Starliner capsule is years behind schedule and still not qualified to fly humans. By the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024, Starliner ought to be prepared to support Crew Dragon’s operational astronaut launches, relieving some of the burden.
Nonetheless, NASA decided to build two spacecraft so that, in the unlikely event that the other was grounded for whatever reason, one would likely be accessible. It appears that the agency decided that adding the possibility that a massive, brand-new, experimental rocket (Starship) would potentially stop all SpaceX Dragon missions in one fell swoop was one bridge too high.
SpaceX’s solution to the issue was as straightforward, sophisticated, and affordable as it could be. The proposal was to change the second of the company’s two Falcon launch pads in Florida, which are currently in use. Located on a secure military station, SpaceX’s LC-40 pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) has launched more Falcon 9s successfully than Pad 39A. It also seems like SpaceX will be able to add a Dragon access tower without having to undergo extensive redesigns or months of downtime due to its configuration.
By far the most productive launch pad for SpaceX is LC-40, where the company plans to launch up to 100 times in 2023. Therefore, it’s imperative that the pad continue to function as much as possible while it’s modified—a significant problem. That’s only conceivable because of a mix of good fortune and the launch pad’s current state of operation.
Essentially, not much work needs to be done by SpaceX in order to facilitate Dragon launches from LC-40. Dragon spacecraft are prepared for flight at a different facility, and they don’t get to the pad until they are prepared to be joined to a Falcon 9 rocket. The largest modification that LC-40 requires is a launch tower; nevertheless, it’s ironic that SpaceX has experience constructing such structures offsite and in pieces thanks to Starship.
