Elon Musk just revealed the reason why Starship was delayed! Starship split out, Hot stage moved….
Welcome back to Great SpaceX.
A new week comes and there’s a lot promised this time for space fans.
Most crucially, SpaceX’s next Starship test launch could lift off right on Friday, pending regulatory approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies.
In fact, last weekend, SpaceX destacked Ship 25 from Booster 9. If you can’t remember, this was the 6th destack of S25 and hopefully the last.
The Hot Staging Ring was also removed.
Well, maybe also good for us to stop guessing if it’s the final stack. Because there is always another. Haha…
However, this is not too surprising or sad.
There is plenty of time to do this before NET Friday launch.
To consider, the most probable issues can arise from either grid fin motors or avionics hardware.
Besides, we also found that Ship 25 lost a tile. So, they should have destacked for that reason.
Anyway, this makes sure that the Mechazilla system gets a constant workout.
Now, there is great news, the issues that led to IFT1 ending the way it did have all been addressed. If there is a failure during IFT2 it will be for something completely different.
There will be no Fail repeats.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also has more confidence in this version of the Ship 25. He expressed this in a tweet in September. “Much higher chance of success than flight 1,” he wrote.
“This time, I think we have ~50% probability of reaching orbital velocity,” he wrote in another tweet earlier in August. “However even getting to stage separation would be a win,” Musk added to his statement.
To have the answer, the Federal Aviation Administration needs to issue a launch license for a second test to be attempted first. The regulator completed its safety review of Starship in October, but the project still needs a sign-off from the US Fish and Wildlife Service for the license to be given.
