Elon Musk Says Booster 10 Just COMPLETED Final Checks Ahead Of IFT-3!
The preparations for the third flight of Starship are making significant headway due to the fact that both vehicles have successfully completed their own solo test campaigns. In order to complete any necessary modifications and inspections before taking off, Booster 10 made its way back to the Shipyard, and Ship 28 was not far behind. Before rolling back to the launch site for integrated stack testing and launch, both vehicles are currently in their respective bays, where they are undergoing last finishing touches. So, when exactly will the IFT-3 take place? After the IFT-3, what comes next? Well, let’s find out!

Recently, on January 2, 2024, Booster 10 successfully returned to the Booster Bay, also known as Mega Bay 1. It was rolled back by SpaceX so that the company could finish the last of the preparations and modifications ahead of its flight.
With the help of the lessons gathered from Booster 9’s launch on November 18, 2023, these final tests can be anything from straightforward avionics and valve operations checks to final add-ons to the booster. They can even include new modifications.
A static fire was attempted by Booster 10 on the 21st of December, 2023. But SpaceX encountered a problem and was forced to resort to the emergency dump procedure. This involved gradually discharging the Liquid Oxygen (LOX) overboard through the vent of the Orbital Launch Mount (OLM).
On December 29, 2023, only a few days before the end of the previous year, Booster 10 successfully completed a static fire that involved 33 engines. Unlike Booster 9, SpaceX didn’t bother to do a spin prime before going straight for a static fire. It is likely that SpaceX has reached a stage where they are confident enough in the engines and the installation to end the spin prime tests that they have been undertaking.
It’s possible that this is due to the newly introduced engine install stands, which make the process of installing shielding and engines significantly simpler, safer, and more accurate than it was in the past.
SpaceX was able to load the booster with propellant and detank it in a very short amount of time, which was another significant advantage of the 33-engine static. It took approximately forty minutes for the LOX tank of Booster 10 to be completely filled, and it wasn’t until almost ninety minutes after the static fire that it was detailed and secured. This highlights the newly installed pumps and subcoolers that were connected not long after the Integrated Flight Test 2 (IFT-2).
During the course of the test, only two LOX subcoolers and one Methane (CH4) subcooler were not utilized. It is now possible for SpaceX to cut the amount of time required to load propellants for a full stack from 97 minutes to around 50 minutes, which is only five minutes more than Falcon Heavy requirements. Furthermore, this is with around 5,000 metric tons of propellant for a full stack Starship.
Additionally, the engine testing for Ship 28 has been finished. For the first time, on December 20, 2023, it performed a full six-engine static test. The second time, on December 29, 2023, it performed a single-engine static test.
