In July 2023, a report from Reuters shocked the EV industry. According to the report, Tesla allegedly “intentionally inflated” the range estimates of its electric cars, with CEO Elon Musk’s approval. About ten years ago, the manufacturer allegedly began using algorithms, according to an anonymous source, that would overstate forecasts at full charge. In addition to a 15-mile buffer that enables the car to continue running on battery power until it reaches zero, the figures become somewhat more realistic after Teslas achieve a 50 percent level of charge, giving drivers a better chance of avoiding becoming stranded. The insider said that Elon “wanted to show good range numbers when fully charged.”
According to the same report, Tesla established a specialized team called the “Diversion Team” last summer with the sole purpose of canceling servicing appointments for customers who were dissatisfied with the false range estimate displayed after a full charge. The narrative goes that after every cancellation, team members would tap a note on a xylophone, and the staff was informed that every postponed appointment resulted in a $1,000 savings for the business.
For the Reuters report, Tesla did not respond; but, in the past, businesses like Apple have acknowledged problems with their prediction algorithms. Prior to the $113 million “batterygate” settlement about throttling, Apple had to deal with the iPhone 4’s signal loss problem, which varied based on how it was held. Eventually, the business expressed its shock at learning that its signal strength formula was incorrect and that it “often displays two more bars than it should.”
Global regulators criticized Tesla in 2023 for its exaggerated range projections. Tesla was forced by the US Environmental Protection Agency to lower its car range estimates for the 2020 model year by an average of 3%. In addition, the carmaker was fined $2.2 million in South Korea earlier that year for barely delivering up to half of the predicted range of its vehicles in cold conditions.
Larger range figures at full charge and quicker drop-offs later are typical in the electric vehicle market, particularly when traveling on highways. When driving continuously without applying regenerative braking to replenish batteries, electric vehicles (EVs) consume a notably higher amount of energy. However, they can occasionally travel much further in cities. Data from EV analytics company Recurrent, which supported the claim, indicated that estimations in vehicles such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Bolt, and Hyundai Kona were more accurate, with the Kona often underestimating its actual range. The study compared real-world vs estimated range.
