Elon Musk and Bill Gates have been engaged in a bit of a back-and-forth recently, with Musk calling Gates out for his investments in clean energy and Gates firing back that Musk is “naive” about the potential of nuclear power. It’s an interesting turn of events, to say the least, and it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
While the Microsoft millionaire and the Tesla and SpaceX giant have never appeared to get along, things have heated up in recent years as the two have openly sparred about everything from electric automobiles to the pandemic. The two billionaires are among the world’s wealthiest, with Musk ranking first and Gates ranking fourth, after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and LVMH Chairman Bernard Arnault. While their public squabbles aren’t usually significant, they appear to fundamentally differ on how to combat illness, climate change, cryptocurrencies, and the significance of space flight.
Things between Gates and Musk initially grew heated in 2020. They were both fighting the coronavirus at the time, with Gates pledging hundreds of millions of dollars to battle the virus and Musk seeking to acquire and manufacture ventilators. Musk has collaborated with the German biotech business CureVac (in which Gates has a stake) to develop a gadget to help in vaccine manufacture. However, Musk was constantly downplaying the virus’s seriousness and harshly criticizing stay-at-home orders. He’d pushed the malaria medicine hydroxychloroquine as a therapy, claimed that youngsters are immune to the virus, and questioned evidence on coronavirus mortality.
Musk’s actions in relation to the virus irritated Gates. “Elon’s strategy is to keep a high level of inappropriate remarks… “I hope he doesn’t get too mixed up in areas where he isn’t interested,” Gates remarked on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”” Musk was enraged by Gates’ remarks and mocked him on Twitter. Musk joked about Gates in many tweets, saying, “Billy G is not my boyfriend” and “The allegation that Bill Gates and I are lovers is totally wrong.”
