Elon Musk’s SpaceX accelerated preparations for the first orbital launch of the Starship.
SpaceX’s major human resource developments in recent months have been the appointment of two senior executives and veterans of the company as direct overseers of operations at the company’s “star base” in Texas. Work in Boca Chica is now handled directly by SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell and Vice President Mark Juncosa.
The former head of the site, Senior Director of Base Operations Shyamal Patel, is leaving the site and moving to Cape Canaveral. He has been busy working on the next-generation SpaceX rocket in Texas for over two years. For him, this was a promotion, but it seems that he did not justify it and returned to the company’s facility at Cape Canaveral (by the way, SpaceX rockets can be launched from this site near NASA spaceports without problems, since the FAA licenses for flights were issued long ago).
Another lead manager of the Starship project was one of the Texas executives of Tesla, Omead Afshar. Afshar has been named VP of Manufacturing for Starship.
Finally, SpaceX junior staff will also get an incentive to work in Texas. Hired workers are promised a 10-20% pay increase if they agree to move closer to the launch site. The company also increased hourly pay for base non-staff employees and added bonuses based on performance in fiscal 2023.
The launch vehicle and Starship as a whole reach a height of 120 m (70 m rocket/booster and 50 m ship). The ship was tested by lifting and landing at a relatively low altitude. Even though B7 hasn’t actually fired up all of its 33 engines, the company has conducted static fire tests of some of them.
