Elon Musk Just UPGRADED Starship That Will SHOCK Everyone!
That much was obvious from the beginning: one SpaceX Starship couldn’t possibly carry us to Mars. It will probably need to stop for fuel several times along the way, thanks to additional Starships, even just to get it beyond Earth’s orbit. It would be considerably harder to accomplish all of that while also recovering all of the spacecraft and their Super Heavy rockets. According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the company may someday create an expendable variant of its next-generation Starship rocket.
Starship is really exceptionally ambitious. Starship is a monster even without taking into account the as-yet-untested ideas of orbital propellant refilling and full, rapid reusability, which are at the core of the entire system. The rocket is 120 meters (about 390 feet) tall and is potentially able to generate up to 7590 tons (about 16.7 million pounds) of thrust at sea level.
Compared to previous launch vehicles, it is bigger, taller, heavier, and more powerful. More than any other rocket, Starship’s Super Heavy booster is powered by 33 Raptor 2 engines.
As soon as it is perfected, SpaceX claims that Starship can launch up to 150 tons (330,000 lbs) to low Earth orbit while also retrieving the orbital spacecraft and suborbital booster for later use. According to CEO Elon Musk, Starship reuse will eventually take just hours, allowing for many flights per day for each ship and launcher and a reduction in the marginal cost of each launch to a few million dollars.
In contrast, Starship’s 39 Raptors deliver roughly ten times as much thrust at liftoff as the workhorse Falcon 9 rocket’s 10 simpler Merlin 1D engines. The Falcon 9 rocket can also launch around 11% as much payload into orbit while using its upper stage. Even so, Musk revealed in the middle of 2020 that the marginal cost of a Falcon 9 launch was $15 million. While this figure is remarkably low, it nonetheless serves as a stark reminder of how far Starship still needs to advance.
There is a lot of work involved in just making sure Starship can go into orbit. Even more difficult, and not fully shown until the rocket can reliably reach orbit, is the successful recovery of Starship and Super Heavy after the fact. If SpaceX cannot reliably recover ships and boosters following orbital launches, it will not be able to reuse Starship. Early prototypes may not even be recoverable, thus there is no certainty that they will be usable.
Every “Starship upper stage” will be functionally disposable until reusability is proven, whether or not Elon Musk wants it to be. Musk most likely implies that SpaceX may or may not opt to create an upper stage for the Starship that is specifically designed for disposable trips. Starship would probably be taken by such a stage, which would purge it of all superfluous material and minimize its mass. Similar ideas have been put out by Musk in the past, who suggested that SpaceX create a “lighter” Starship model “without a heat shield or fins/legs” for disposable interplanetary launches.
