SpaceX’s President just officially announced Starship Super Heavy 33 engines FIRING today
Boom….
Today will be a big day for SpaceX!
“We are going to attempt a 33-engine static fire booster test for Starship. It’s really the final ground test that we can do before we light ‘em up and go.”
Speaking at the Federal Aviation Administration Commercial Space Transportation Conference on Feb. 8, Gwynne Shotwell, president, and chief operating officer of SpaceX, announced the impending test, the final major technical milestone before the vehicle’s first orbital launch attempt.
Find out everything about this in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Only a few hours left, SpaceX will attempt a “static fire,” simultaneously testing all 33 engines that sit at the base of Starship’s rocket booster.
An overpressure notice has been delivered for 33 engine static fires from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
When it ignites all 33 available engines for the first time, its maximum thrust could leap to 7590 tons (16.7 million pounds), beating the next most powerful rocket in history – the Soviet N1 – by nearly 60%. In other words, SpaceX will be attempting something unprecedented in rocketry.
The company had been hinting that the test was approaching for some time. Bill Gerstenmaier, SpaceX vice president for build and flight reliability, said at a conference on Jan. 27 that the test could take place the following week, although he warned “We still have a lot of work in front of us to get there and it’s not easy.”
