When you look up at the moon in the night sky, you’d never guess it’s slowly drifting away from Earth. But we all know better. The Apollo missions of NASA installed reflective panels on the moon in 1969. These have revealed that the moon is currently moving away from the Earth at a rate of 3.8 cm per year.
When we project the moon’s current rate of recession back in time, we get a collision between the Earth and the moon around 1.5 billion years ago. The moon, on the other hand, was formed around 4.5 billion years ago, implying that the current recession rate is a poor predictor of the past.
In an effort to learn more about the distant past of our solar system, we have been utilizing a variety of methods.
Recently, we found the ideal location for learning more about the long-term evolution of our waning moon. And it comes not from examining the moon directly but rather from deciphering signals in the oldest rock layers on Earth.
Observing through the layers
In the picturesque Karijini National Park in western Australia, numerous canyons cut through 2.5 billion year old, rhythmically stacked sediments. These sediments are banded iron formations, which are layers of minerals with a high iron and silica content that were formerly widely distributed on the ocean floor and are now present in the oldest portions of the Earth’s crust.
Cliff exposures at Joffre Falls demonstrate how darker, thinner horizons alternate with layers of reddish-brown iron deposit that are just under a meter thick at regular intervals.
A softer sort of rock makes up the darker intervals, which is why erosion is more likely to occur there. An additional consistent, smaller-scale variation is visible when examining the outcrops in more detail. A pattern of alternating layers of white, reddish, and blueish-gray can be seen on the polished rock surfaces of the gorge’s seasonal river water.
The subject of where the various scales of cyclical, repeating patterns observed in these old rock layers came from was first posed in 1972 by Australian geologist AF Trendall. He hypothesized that the patterns could be connected to earlier climate changes brought on the so-called “Milankovitch cycles.”
Cyclical climate changes
According to the Milankovitch cycles, the distribution of sunlight that Earth receives over the course of years is affected by minute, cyclical changes in the shape of the planet’s orbit and the direction of its axis.
