Recall back in 2020, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 reorbital rocket system successfully launched the Crew Dragon to the International Space Station, making it the first time that NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley had been transported within a commercial spacecraft. The SpaceX spacesuit, the newest iteration of astronautical clothing, was also made public by the expedition.
According to Chris Trigg, manager of SpaceX spacesuits and crew equipment, the SpaceX spacesuit design is customized to its wearers for maximum safety and comfort, in addition to the number of life-supporting technologies attached from seat to suit via “umbilical cord.”

The Spacesuit was Redesigned by NASA for the First Time in 40 Years.
The new spacesuit that astronauts will use to explore the Moon as part of the Artemis mission has been unveiled by NASA. The new suit, developed by Axiom Space, is intended to enhance astronauts’ mobility as they labour on the lunar surface.
The prototype suit was unveiled at an event on March 15th. It was created for the Artemis III mission, which would see the first woman and person of color walk on the Moon. Esther Marquis, a costume designer who worked on the television series For All Mankind, created a dark grey cover for the prototype, but the real garment will be white for thermal reasons.
According to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, “NASA’s partnership with Axiom is critical to landing astronauts on the Moon and continuing American leadership in space. Building on NASA’s years of research and expertise, Axiom’s next generation space suits will not only enable the first woman to walk on the Moon, but they will also open opportunities for more people to explore and conduct science on the Moon than ever before.”
Since the days of the Space Shuttle, NASA astronauts have worn basically the same spacesuit design, with little modification in the technology. Even though the classic suit design has stood the test of time, the range of motion it permits is notably restricted.
A new suit was required to allow astronauts to move, bend, and squat comfortably. This is crucial when working in a low-gravity environment, like the Moon, as opposed to the microgravity environment of the International Space Station.
The Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, is a new suit prototype that draws inspiration from some of the advancements achieved by NASA for the xEMU, or Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit, prototype. The improvements put an emphasis on concerns including enhanced mobility and safety standards, as well as thermal needs to withstand the chilly temperatures present on the Moon’s south pole.
