Elon Musk Just ENDED The Race For LFP4680: “Goodbye Lithium!”
As automakers commit to electrifying significant segments of their fleets, the manufacturing of electric vehicle (EV) batteries will increase over the next few years, and plastics are anticipated to play an increasingly important role in that production. In today’s episode, PolyJoule, a startup business located near Boston, tries to develop a brand-new battery that would function somewhere between those old lead acid batteries and lithium-ion cells.
Their method is based on polymer plastic with about 12,000 charge cycles rather than metal. This battery outperforms even the 4680 battery by six times the amount that a 4680 battery could. Only two to three thousand charge cycles total over the course of its lifetime. Approximately one megawatt of electricity can be discharged from PolyJoule batteries in 10 seconds as opposed to the typical lithium-ion battery’s required of 60 seconds. What is the energy density of this battery, then?
The currently under development PolyJoule battery cell has an energy density that is 60 watt hours per kilogram, or five times less than that of the Tesla 4680 battery. Additionally, weight and energy density are closely related. We are told that each PolyJoule battery cell weighs 71 grams, which is five times less than the weight of the Tesla 4680 battery cell, which was fixed at 355 grams. What does that imply for the current price of the PolyJoule battery?
Each kilowatt hour of the PolyJoule battery costs roughly 65 dollars. Many industry watchers contend that prices must fall to $20 or less per kilowatt hour.

However, the Fletchling company still has economies of scale to achieve. Even still, the average cost of a lithium-ion battery is still about 132 dollars per kilowatt hour, despite the fact that their price has dropped significantly over the past ten years. Likewise, the price of a PolyJoule battery is twice as low as that of a 4680 battery.
The promise of this battery is incredible. It costs 65 dollars for one kilowatt hour, which equates to 325 dollars for five kilowatt hours, which will power your entire home, including air conditioning, for an hour. For a total cost of $6,500 for 20 hours of energy storage or $3,250 for 10 hours of power backup. A lifetime’s worth of use is equivalent to around one day for 30,000 cycles, which is 100 years.
Therefore, if it performs as promised, it will be a winner based on 10,000 tests that produces a very good battery for the home that satisfies the requirements: cheap cost, safe, and a long lifetime. But how precisely does this battery operate?
