Cascadia is most known for a massive magnitude 9 earthquake that occurred there in 1700 and caused a tsunami all the way to Japan. Cascadia is located off the Pacific Northwest, where a plate of ocean crust plunges beneath North America and into the mantle. Modern times, however, have seen an unsettling lack of the minor, everyday earthquakes that are typical at other subduction zones. Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, wants to colonize Mars, and there is at least one good reason for this. In a recent interview, Musk highlighted this.
The Tesla CEO provided scenarios that would seriously endanger Earth as an explanation. The planet could be destroyed or rendered inhabitable by a supervolcano, a meteor or massive earthquakes.
There are many things the Pacific Northwest is renowned for, including its beer, its music, and its fabled large-footed creatures. Though they should, most people don’t connect it to earthquakes. The Cascadia megathrust fault, which stretches 600 miles from Northern California up to Vancouver Island in Canada and cuts through several significant urban centers, including Seattle and Portland, Oregon, is located there.
In recent years, this geologic fault has been relatively unnoticed. There haven’t been many earthquakes that were felt by a large number of people along the Cascadia megathrust, and none that could compare to a devastating occurrence like the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 near the active San Andreas in California. It won’t necessarily remain silent, though. Large earthquakes of up to magnitude 9 are possible, according to scientists.
Nobody was aware that a significant earthquake had ever occurred in the Cascadia subduction zone thirty years ago. No one even knew it existed 45 years ago.
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked on the nation’s first formal cross-country journey in May 1804, departing from St. Louis with their Corps of Discovery. They arrived at the Pacific Ocean 18 months later and set up camp not far from the modern town of Astoria, Oregon. The United States had just turned 29 years old at the time. Canada wasn’t a nation yet.
White explorers had no idea what was in wait for them in the vast regions of the continent; Thomas Jefferson, who ordered the expedition, imagined the men would encounter wooly mammoths. For thousands of years, Native Americans had inhabited the Northwest, but they lacked a written language and were not subjected to seismological studies among the many other things that the invading Europeans did. The immigrants took the property they came upon at face value, and at face value it was a find: huge, affordable, temperate, fertile, and, surprisingly, benign, according to all appearances.
Before anyone realized that the Pacific Northwest had experienced a prolonged period of stillness rather than just being a tranquil place, a century and a half had passed. Investigating and interpreting the area’s seismic past took another fifty years.
