Elon Musk’s New Tesla Engine Will DESTROY The EV Industry!
The next generation of Tesla’s PMSM traction motors will not use rare earth permanent magnets, the firm announced on March 1 at its 2023 Investor Day. What sort of permanent magnets will be used in Tesla’s future motor if not rare-earth ones? What is the mysterious magnet from Tesla? Let’s find out!

Tesla Inc.’s desire to eliminate rare earths from next models has angered industry players, but it should also spur international efforts to develop replacements to electric car motors that now rely on the element.
Tesla’s upcoming drive unit has a permanent magnet motor that uses no materials, according to Collin, vice president of powertrain engineering. The Model 3 and Model Y powertrains have already decreased consumption of heavy rare earths by a quarter. Campbell stated at the company’s investor day earlier this month.
The manufacturer wants to cut expenses, stay away from procedures that pose a risk to the environment and human health, and rely less on products that are subject to extreme price changes.
Because of their volatile costs and China’s tight control over the supply chain, rare earths, which are used in magnets in everything from phones to wind turbines and fighter jets, have long been a problem for automakers and the renewable energy industry. About two-thirds of the mining and 85% of the processing of the mineral are done in China.
The dangers of relying on Beijing were made clear in 2010, when prices jumped following China’s decision to cut exports, and again in 2019 and 2020, when there was talk that China would once more impose export restrictions due to trade concerns with the US.
Other automakers, such as BMW AG, Toyota Motor Corporation, and General Motors Co., have also tried to lessen their reliance on rare earths.
JC Mag Rare-Earth Co. Ltd. as well as Jiangsu Huahong Technology Stock Co. The biggest producer of the mineral outside of China, Lynas Rare Earths Ltd., has seen its share price drop by almost a quarter this month. Shares of producers including those fell immediately after Campbell’s remarks.
According to Nils Backberg, founder of the London-based consultancy Project Blue, the lack of diversification in the supply chains for rare earth permanent magnets is “a major concern for the industry within the geopolitics of critical materials.” More people are expected to use less expensive, but less performance- and efficiency-focused, technology.
An alternative would be ferrite magnets, which are formed of iron and alloyed with components like barium and strontium and are more readily available and less expensive, according to William Roberts, a senior research analyst at the London-based consultancy Row Motion.
GM has utilized them in the past, and Proreal Ltd., a Japanese company, announced in December that it had created a motor utilizing ferrite magnets that was on par with rare earth component performance.
A $17.5 million US Department of Energy grant was awarded to Minneapolis-based Niron Magnetics Inc. last year to support its development on rare-earth free magnets that use iron nitride-based technology. Niron Magnetics Inc. has teamed with Volvo Cars AB.
