Yesterday, SpaceX just experienced another explosion. But unlike the others before, this explosion proved to be a triumph in its own right.
Why?
As it turns out, they are testing an upgraded Flight termination system as a part of recertification.
During the first Starship orbital flight last month, just before a minute and a half into its mission, the rocket’s flight termination system was initiated to break up the vehicle before it veered too far off course. Essentially, the ordinance on board the vehicle detonates to rupture its fuel tanks, leading to an RUD, or rapid unscheduled disassembly. However, in this case, there was about a 40-second delay between the initiation of the system and the rocket breaking apart.
This lag posed no safety issues as the rocket was safely offshore, but it is an unacceptable delay for a system that is supposed to terminate flight almost immediately.
Musk in an update said the problem could be solved with a “longer detonation cord” to make sure the propellant tanks are fully unzipped rapidly.
SpaceX then quickly proceeded to do this. Test tank B6.1 was tested to destruction yesterday. It looked like it was filled with water…and then a small explosion seemed to cause it to burst.
