A significant reorganization is underway at SpaceX’s Texas launch facility as a push for the rocket’s next milestone intensifies.
SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell and vice president Mark Juncosa – two of the most influential executives at the company aside from Musk himself – are now overseeing the facility and operations of the company’s Starbase location.
Well, this means Elon Musk will step back from some of his day-to-day work at Starbase.
So, how will this huge change impact on Starship program?
Analyze every aspect of this in today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
Two weeks ago, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk officially took control of Twitter. This isn’t a small company, and Musk’s plans for Twitter aren’t small either, meaning time will be taken from his day to manage the venture. This means less time Musk gets to look over SpaceX’s Starship or Starlink programs, which need help as they expand to become major money makers for the space company. His time is even already split as Tesla’s chief executive.
Understandably that with the new purchase, Musk has focused his time on Twitter. He has been traveling to and from different Twitter offices in California and New York, with occasional stops in Austin, according to @ElonJet.
The last time Musk’s private jet stopped at Starbase was October 13, lining up with full-stack testing of Starship.
This has led to many questions about whether Starship will continue to delay.
Turn out, Elon Musk has a solution for this.
Gwynne Shotwell will now officially assume oversight of the company’s Starship program and Starbase facilities.
In addition, SpaceX executive Mark Juncosa – a brash, unconventional engineer that’s successfully led the Starlink program since Musk fired several over-cautious executives in 2018 – took over technical leadership of the Starship program in the summer of 2022.
The space venture also quietly brought on Omead Afshar, a Texas-based Tesla operations lead, as a vice president of Starship production.
