Across the United States, SpaceX will be able to test its cellular Starlink system, which will beam data to smartphones, thanks to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted the business a “experimental special temporary authorization” on Thursday in order to carry out the test, which would involve beaming the satellite link to T-Mobile phones that have not been modified on the ground. SpaceX has until the 14th of June, which is 180 days, to carry out the pilot phase.

A week after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) first only granted SpaceX limited approval to begin deploying the cellular Starlink system, the clearance has now been granted. Following the initial permission, the corporation was able to begin the process of launching satellites that were equipped with the technology that would power the cellular connectivity. However, at that time, one of the most significant limitations was that SpaceX was only able to carry out brief tests in order to ensure that the antennas on the satellites were functioning properly. Any additional testing was not permitted.

T-Mobile’s spectrum over the 1910-1915 and 1990-1995MHz radio bands is being utilized by SpaceX in order to test the primary objective of the cellular Starlink system, which is to transmit data to devices on Earth that have not been modified. This is made possible by the temporary authorization that was granted on Thursday.

SpaceX claims that the test will eventually involve the use of 840 satellites, each of which will function as an orbiting cell tower, in order to transmit the connectivity to 2,000 test devices that are located on the ground. The company’s initial intention was to test the system in thirteen different locations; however, they later informed the Federal Communications Commission that there were twelve additional “radioastronomy sites” on the list.

“At any given time, approximately 60 of these 840 (satellite) payloads will be serving handsets in the United States under this experimental authorization,” according to the application submitted by the business. Mountain View, California, Kansas City, Kansas, Redmond, Washington, and Dallas, Texas are just few of the locations that are being looked into for the test.
