Elon Musk Is FURIOUS | China Keeps Copying SpaceX Rocket
A new rocket from China resembles SpaceX’s Starship shockingly. Wait, that seems surprisingly familiar. In the event that imitation truly is the sincerest form of flattery, SpaceX must be extremely happy with the Chinese space program.

In a presentation earlier this month, Wang Xiaojun, president of the country’s Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), displayed a design for a two-stage methane-liquid launch system that, as SpaceNews noted, appeared to be a familiar design.

Could China really copy SpaceX’s Starship? Let;s find out in today’s episode!

The next-generation Long March 9 rocket’s plans have lately changed, according to China.

Missions to deep space will eventually be launched using the super heavy-lift rocket it plans to utilize, which won’t be expendable. Rather, it will be completely reusable, much like SpaceX’s Starship launch system, bringing down the cost of subsequent trips.

How does China’s ambitious launch vehicle compare against Starship now that we know a little bit more about the upcoming Long March 9?

The first successful launch of SpaceX’s Starship rocket, albeit being explosive, slightly overshadowed China’s news that Long March 9 will now be totally reusable.

The statement was made in late April at a celebration of China’s national space day in Hefei, in the province of Anhui, only a few days after Starship completed its maiden full flight test on April 20.

The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) is responsible for the Long March 9 rocket’s development. A number of full flow staged combustion methane engines attached to its first stage will power the three stages of the rocket.

If everything goes according to plan with that model, CALT also hopes to construct a two-stage Long March 9 derivative for LEO missions.

This is a departure from China’s original goal to develop a 500-ton-thrust Long March 9 rocket employing kerosene-liquid oxygen engines. The expendable type was initially planned to take to the skies in 2028 to 2030. The development of Long March 9’s Starship-like variant will now take several more years.

It is obvious that China and the rest of the world are monitoring the advancement of the totally reusable Starship launch system very closely. In fact, CATL only recently made the outcomes of a frame-by-frame launch video analysis accessible to everyone. In a report earlier this year, the European Space Agency warned that unless Europe invests more money in its space industry, it runs the risk of slipping irreparably behind.

Comparing Long March 9 and Starship

In comparing Long March 9 with Starship, the rocket systems’ development times may be the most important metrics.

Although SpaceX has had to repeatedly postpone the launch of Starship, it is still moving forward and breaking new ground, giving the space sector capabilities never before seen.

The U.S.-based firm uses a “fail fast, learn fast” strategy, which enables it to quickly improve its designs, even though SpaceX might have to wait a time before getting the go-ahead for a second flight test from the Federal Aviation Authority.
