Elon Musk Just Announced A Larger And More Advanced Starship!
At some point, SpaceX’s Starship mega-rocket might live up to its grandiose moniker. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, claims that a future version of Starship, which completed its third test flight last week, will travel interstellar. So, let’s check what will we expect in upcoming flights.

“This Starship is designed to traverse our entire solar system and beyond to the cloud of objects surrounding us. A future Starship, much larger and more advanced, will travel to other star systems,” Musk stated on X on Monday, March 18.
Two components make up Starship: the massive Super Heavy first-stage rocket and the Starship, or simply Ship, upper-stage spacecraft, which is 165 feet (50 meters) tall. Both components are made of stainless steel.
SpaceX’s next-generation Raptor engines—33 for Super Heavy and six for Ship—power both of these vehicles, which are intended to be entirely and quickly reusable.
Starship is around four hundred feet (122 meters) tall when stacked. In its reusable mode, it can lift up to 165 tons (150 metric tons) into Earth orbit, making it the largest and most potent rocket ever constructed. In contrast, the primary Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX can carry up to 25 tons (or 23 metric tons) of cargo at a time.
During its test flight last week, Starship performed admirably, demonstrating significant advancement over its previous two missions, which took place in April and November of last year. The first test mission, for instance, concluded after just four minutes, and the second ended approximately eight minutes after launch. However, the flight on Thursday, March 14, lasted for roughly fifty minutes before the Ship broke apart as it was reentering Earth’s atmosphere.
Starship, according to SpaceX, will assist human settlement on Mars and the moon. NASA shares this vision: as part of its Artemis program, the government chose Starship to be the first crewed lunar lander. With the Artemis 3 mission, which is slated to launch in September 2026, Starship will attempt to land astronauts on the moon for the first time, assuming all goes as planned.
The preparation of Starship for astronaut transport in deep space will require a great deal more work and test flights. It will also take a much larger jump to get an interstellar version operating, one that is difficult to envision today.
Simply said, the distances between the stars are so enormous that humanity is far from constructing spacecraft that can travel between them in a reasonable period. Consider the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, which is 4.2 light-years away from our sun and the closest star to it. That is about 40 trillion kilometers, which equates to around 25 trillion miles. That exotic ground would take tens of thousands of years for a probe fueled by conventional rocket engines to cover.
