Elon Musk Just CONFIRMED The RELEASE Of This New Tesla Engine!
During its annual shareholder meeting, Tesla declared that it would introduce a new generation of permanent magnet motors without the use of rare earth elements.

When the Model 3 was introduced in 2017, Tesla started utilizing rare earth materials in its DC permanent magnet motors. The carmaker claimed that since the Model 3 hit the market, its use of certain materials had dropped by 25%.

Tesla presented two graphics that contrasted the use of rare earths in the Model Y permanent magnet motor with the hypothetical next-generation engine during the Investor Day event. The next-gen motor showed zero grams for each “Rare Earth” category, but the Model Y graphic indicated roughly 500 grams for “Rare Earth 1,” and roughly 10 grams for each “Rare Earth 2,” and “Rare Earth 3.”

Although common materials in electric vehicle (EV) motors include neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium, the company did not specify which rare earth elements it uses. However, Tesla did not specify what materials would be used in place of rare-earth components in the permanent magnets of the new motors.

The industry was completely taken aback when Tesla announced plans to create a permanent magnet motor without any rare earth elements. With the most powerful magnet currently available, what technology could possibly compete?

And so in today’s episode, we’ll uncover the possible material that Tesla used as an alternative to rare earth elements with the release of their new engine. So, stay tuned!

At Tesla’s investor day on March 1, Colin Campbell, the company’s director of drive-train engineering, made a startling revelation. He declared, “We’ve designed our next drive unit, which uses a permanent-magnet motor, to use absolutely no rare-earth elements.” It was anticipated that there would be other adjustments made, but few would have imagined that a permanent-magnet motor devoid of rare earths would soon be ready for commercial use.

Induction motors, which are employed in Tesla’s earlier models, use alternating current to provide the magnetic force that turns the rotor. The Model 3, which was released in 2017, adopted motors that produced the magnetic field using powerful permanent magnets. Greater efficiency and power density are offered by permanent-magnet (PM) motors. According to research by IDTechex, PM motors will hold more than 80% of the global market for electric vehicle motors in 2022.

Even still, the desire exists for automakers to lessen their reliance on rare earths for the production of powerful magnets. The powerful iron, boron, and rare earth neodymium (NdFeB) alloy is still widely used. To adjust or improve characteristics, more rare earths might be added. The auto sector suffers from China’s strict control over the supply of essential commodities, especially now that a divide between Beijing and Washington is deepening. About two-thirds of the annual global demand for rare earths is met by mining in China, and an even greater portion is met by refining.

The cost of rare earths is another significant issue. They have experienced huge fluctuations in the past, and as the globe shifts toward electrification and renewable energy sources like windmills, the need for powerful magnets may rise dangerously high.
