Elon Musk Just EXPOSED NASA’s Biggest Mistake!

Poking it with a stick is typically not a very effective strategy when it comes to astronomy. Poking planets typically yields little information, just as you can’t poke stars with a stick. But if your stick is really cutting-edge sample collection equipment, and you aim for a galactic time capsule made of loose regolith and dust, and now we have the shot for the biggest and most technically advanced stick poking in human history. And with this ground-breaking technology the OSIRIS-Rex spacecraft was sent on a mission to the asteroid Bennu and that is exactly what followed.

So, let’s explore the pivotal moment—the culmination of a four-year journey—when a US spacecraft prodded an asteroid for the first time in history. And the subsequent discoveries only served to confirm that the experts had been mistaken all along. Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, recently provided support for this. What precisely was discovered in Bennu? Let’s investigate!

The NASA-developed spacecraft OSIRIS-REx, also known as the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer, was launched in 2016 with the goal of collecting and returning to Earth a sample from the near-Earth asteroid 101955 Bennu. Because Bennu is a very old asteroid, this expedition is crucial. It is believed to have existed since the beginning of the Solar System, making it a gold mine of knowledge about the genesis of the Solar System and perhaps even the beginnings of life.

Although asteroids have been imaged before and even had stardust taken from comet tails, this marked the first time a NASA probe would have ever gone to an asteroid to actually take a sample from its surface. The objective of NASA was to gather a 60g sample of regolith and dust from Bennu’s surface. It would accomplish it by slowly sinking into Bennu’s orbit. It would slowly drift down, extending its lengthy Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (or TAGSAM), taking care not to disrupt or contaminate the asteroid’s surface with its thrusters.

It would then discharge a burst of nitrogen gas from its arm as soon as it made contact with the asteroid, stirring up debris that would be collected in its sampler. After collecting its sample, OSIRIS-REx would depart for home. That task, though, was not as easy as it would have seemed. Given that Bennu’s diameter is just about 490 meters, it is a comparatively small asteroid with very little gravity. Because of its low gravity, scientists had assumed that Bennu would be formed of relatively thin materials, despite the fact that they had previously sketched out its general shape with a fairly high degree of accuracy using radar imaging.

It wasn’t the case like this though. Massive stones, some measuring 58 meters broad, were all around Bennu. In order to collect its sample, OSIRIS-REx would only be able to land in a few locations. In order to choose the optimal site for its system-spanning pogo-stick jump, OSIRIS-REx circled Bennu for 505 days, nearly a year, and mapped out its surface. NASA had selected Nightingale, Kingfisher, Osprey, and Sandpiper as viable sample collecting sites after thorough consideration. It is notable that a bird theme was used.
