Numerous companies have embraced advanced batteries for diverse purposes. At the moment, they are utilized in portable electronic gadgets, electric and hybrid cars, energy storage systems, medical devices, industrial equipment, and military applications. For instance, Sila Nanotechnologies is developing a new kind of lithium-ion battery that substitutes a silicon-based anode for a graphite anode. In comparison to conventional lithium-ion batteries, the business asserts that this new kind of battery will have a better energy density and quicker charging periods. The company wants to increase battery cell energy density by 20 to 40%.
The most fascinating material developments for Li-ion batteries are the creation and application of silicon anodes and Li-metal anodes. However, improvements to rate capability, safety, and even cost are being researched as well. It is intriguing that these anode materials may be able to significantly boost energy density. Commercial usage has been slowed and constrained up to this point due to significant longevity difficulties with silicon and lithium metal.
Li-ion technology is expected to maintain its dominance in the battery industry for the foreseeable future despite challenges like cathode and anode selection, improvements in cell design, and the rate of increase in energy density. This is because the EV sector is so significant to the global economy as a whole. A performance metric will almost always be sacrificed in order to improve another, whether it be energy density, cost, or sustainability. Even when taking into account battery chemistries other than those based on lithium, this is still valid.
Alternatives to lithium-based chemistries often give up energy density for better environmental credentials, lower capital costs, lower lifetime costs, improved rate capability, or longer cycle lives. In the end, the demands of a specific application and market dictate the combination of performance traits and, as a result, the decision regarding technology and chemistry. For instance, stationary energy storage is seeing an increase in demand for longer-duration storage techniques. This makes way for breakthroughs like the redox flow battery, which more easily scales up energy capacity while also allowing for the use of cheap and widely available active materials.
