Elon Musk Just LEAKED A “FOREVER” Battery For 2024!
Elon Musk made a promise, and Jeff Dahn kept it! Tesla may soon have a battery that makes their robot taxis and long-haul electric trucks possible, according to Dahn, who disclosed this to the world with the publication of a groundbreaking work in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES). And that is what Elon Musk dubbed as the “million mile” battery with at least 10000 discharge cycles. But, what if we have a “forever” battery with 200000 discharge cycles? As a partner in battery research, Dahn and his team work with Tesla. People that are interested in Tesla are probably familiar with Jeff Dahn. He has been a research collaborator with Tesla since 2016 and teaches at Dalhousie University. He has concentrated on making lithium-ion batteries more affordable while also extending their lifespan and increasing their energy density.
Two years ago, the idea of a “million-mile battery,” a remarkably durable lithium-ion battery that could survive decades while driving an electric vehicle over large distances and costing roughly the same as a regular battery, caused a stir. When Tesla and General Motors later indicated they were close to actually creating such a battery, the uproar that was initially caused by a report co-written by Jeff Dahn, a professor at Dalhousie University and chief battery scientist for Tesla, gained additional traction.
Tesla’s Patent
Dahn aspires to develop batteries that are never disposed of in the recycling. They would transfer to another vehicle, act as a standby power source in buildings and factories, or participate in vehicle-to-grid services that store and supply electricity during times of peak demand for electric utilities, among other second-life uses. Given that the full battery would still be in use and not just a small portion of it would contain recycled metals, this strategy might significantly minimize the mining of battery metals and minerals. Dahn informed his online audience that he didn’t think “1,000-cycle batteries” were ideal for the environment.
Dahn reported using a reliable nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, known as the NMC532, in conjunction with a “very good” artificial graphite anode to get there. He focused a lot on electrolyte additives, which would employ compounds like methyl acetate to allow the battery to charge quickly without harming it. The electrolyte is the liquid that separates the two electrodes. The use of big single crystals for the cathode rather than the more typical smaller polycrystalline particles was also mentioned by him. Single crystals, he claimed, are significantly less prone to microcracking, a bane of lifetime. As lithium ions move in and out of the electrodes, the electrodes expand and contract, which causes microcracking. The relatively strong nature of single crystals, but prevents them from breaking.
According to Dahn’s Dalhousie lab, their experimental battery cell has now undergone 13,000 cycles, which would enable a car to travel between 3.2 million and 3.7 million miles while maintaining an astounding 93% of its initial capacity, depending on how many miles were traveled each year.
