Elon Musk Just LEAKED SpaceX’s NEXT Big Thing!
To improve the nation’s air defense, the Air Force and SpaceX are working together. The Department of Defense has been working more closely with the private sector to create and deploy technologies that will better enable it to handle new problems in warfighting. Just last week, the Air Force informed reporters at the Pentagon that Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and other US military branches would collaborate to create the Air Force’s Secret Hypersonic Aircraft. How would they make this happen? Why are major powers competing for the ability to launch hypersonic aircraft, and what is the big deal about them? Let’s find out!

According to information that is publicly accessible, it is becoming more and more obvious that American R&D facilities are home to at least two and most likely three hypersonic aircraft that are currently being developed. Such a platform has the potential to overturn the hypersonic arms race that America has been repeatedly depicted as losing to China and, to a lesser extent, Russia, if or maybe more correctly, when it enters service.
The fact that America has experience flying reusable hypersonic aircraft may, however, come as the biggest surprise to some. In reality the United States had a crewed hypersonic bomber under active development before the Soviets even launched Sputnik into orbit.
In the 1950s, the United States started working on hypersonic aircraft. A hypersonic bomber known as the X-20 Dyna-Soar was being developed by Boeing at the time Sputnik was launched in October 1957, with the help of German engineers who had migrated to the United States as a result of Operation Paperclip. The aircraft would take off atop a rocket, then separate from the booster and use its lifting-body shape to bounce over the earth’s atmosphere, traversing enormous distances at speeds in excess of Mach 18, though it’s not always acceptable to measure exo-atmospheric speeds in Mach numbers.
The X-15, a manned, rocket-powered hypersonic aircraft from North American Aviation, was also just commencing testing at the time; its maiden unpowered flight occurred in 1959.
A 30-year-old Navy test pilot and aeronautical engineer named Neil Armstrong was one of the first candidates selected by the Air Force when it began selecting pilots for the new space bomber that was beginning to take shape in 1960. Armstrong, who had already proven to be in great demand, went on to fly the X-15 in April 1962 before abandoning the X-20 program entirely in favour of reaching even higher speeds and altitudes with the still-relatively-new NASA. He was given leadership of the Gemini 8 mission, which was scheduled to launch four years later. Three years later, he added a small but noteworthy feather to his hat by becoming the first person to set foot on the moon.
The initial mock-up of the X-20 Dyna-Soar, once constructed, had a wingspan of 20.4 feet and a length of 35 and a half feet. Despite how far-reaching the concept may have looked, it was thought to be completely practical given the available technology, albeit at a hefty expense. And it was the cost, not the constraints of technology, that would ultimately bring the Dyna-Soar to an end.
