Elon Musk’s private space business SpaceX is working on a massive rocket named Starship that will one-day transport humans to Mars. However, it will first land NASA astronauts on the moon.
NASA said that it has granted SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract to utilize Starship to transport humans from lunar orbit to the moon’s surface.
The arrangement continues NASA’s practice of enlisting the help of commercial corporations to transport astronauts, cargo, and robotic explorers to space. However, it also signifies a victory for Mr. Musk in the war of space billionaires. Blue Origin, founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, was one of the competitors for the NASA lunar contract.
