Elon Musk just officially revealed Starship Super heavy will eventually only have 2-3 grid fins instead of four as now.
This will definitely create a huge change for the Starship flight.
But why does Elon Musk change this?

Importantly, we have Grid Fin Updates.
Grid fins are a type of flight control surface commonly used on bombs and rockets. A grid fin is a lattice of smaller aerodynamic surfaces within a box. Because of their unique design they often get compared to waffle irons or potato mashers.
SpaceX originally started using them around 2014 on the Falcon 9 booster. Late in 2015, the grid fins were able to help control and successfully land a Falcon 9 booster for the first time. This was a very big deal and helped improve SpaceX’s confidence in the design.
So far, there are four large grid fins at the very top. However, according to the Everyday Astronaus video, Elon said they are shrunk the grid fins significantly from where we started out. They’re much lighter.
” We obviously don’t need four. I think we could probably
get away with two, definitely not more than three.”
Even with grid fins, they really would be moving to aspirationally two grid fins, but certainly not more than three. And the third one can be small.
“The little vestigial guy in the, I like just imagining a tiny little guy in, on one, on one sector”, Musk said.
