As they replace gas tanks in cars and find their way into homes and businesses to store electricity from rooftop solar panels or the grid, batteries—the workhorse technology that gives life to things we can’t live without—are playing a wider role in society.
Although it may not be a popular topic at dinner parties just yet, battery technology advancements could change that. The Powerwall, a low-cost home battery pack from Tesla, which was unveiled back in May, played a part in increasing public awareness of this rapidly developing industry.
Batteries are the dominant players in the US energy storage sector, which is expanding very quickly.
By 2030, experts predict that yearly installations will exceed 400 GWh, assuming that current policy trends continue. It should be noted that GWh is the abbreviation for gigawatts (GW), which stands for the unit of power. According to a power basis, this translates to capacity increases of around 110 GW by 2030, which is nearly equal to the peak residential electricity consumption of France and Germany taken together. With a carbon budget of 1.9 degrees Celsius, this estimate is basically consistent with our climate change scenario.
Since entering the market in the 1990s, lithium-ion batteries have generally outperformed previous rechargeable batteries in terms of energy density, longevity, and operating temperature range.
They have thereby established themselves as the norm for powering consumer gadgets such as laptops, smartphones, and other devices. They are also useful for storing and transferring solar electricity, as well as for powering automobiles, because to their energy density and durability.
In both the electric vehicle and grid energy storage businesses, lithium-ion batteries are now in the lead. They naturally outperform more recent battery technologies because to their widespread use in consumer gadgets like laptops and mobile phones.
However, they cost money. Compared to a laptop or smartphone, a battery pack for a car or to store solar energy needs a lot more lithium-ion cells. These expenses pile up and give context for why an electric automobile is typically more expensive than a gasoline-powered one.
Then there are the extra expenses associated with designing and manufacturing battery packs, as well as the electronics and software need to monitor battery status and guarantee optimal performance.
In order to fulfill expected demand in the electric vehicle and grid energy storage markets, more manufacturers are building additional plants, which is bringing down battery prices.
