The billionaire and founder of Tesla, the greatest EV manufacturer, Elon Musk announced the launch of his new hydrogen car, Model H. It was quite shocking for the car industry as Musk initially had some reservations about the idea, that is, since 2015. He actually called the power source “extremely silly”. What made Elon Musk change his mind? How is this going to affect the car market, and oil and gas industry? How can Model H revolutionize the car driving experience with its unique features?

You’ve probably heard a lot recently about electric vehicles and the headlines on legislation to limit automobile carbon emissions. Another type of zero-emission vehicle, however, releases just water vapor while transporting you along the road. That is a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, similar to an electric vehicle but with some key distinctions that set hydrogen cars apart and make them far rarer. A battery-electric car’s electric motor is the same type that a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (HFCV) uses to turn its wheels. It is propelled by a stack of fuel cells, in which oxygen from the air and pure hydrogen (H2) travel through a membrane to create energy and water vapor. Since a fuel-cell car is technically a series hybrid, they are also referred to as fuel-cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEV).

In reality, hydrogen is an energy transporter according to scientists rather than a fuel. Ignore that distinction, though, as HFCV drivers refuel at “hydrogen filling stations,” which are conceptually quite similar to the trusted old gas station and have a five-minute refueling period, to fill their carbon-fiber high-pressure tanks. The most prevalent element around us, according to some reports, is hydrogen. That is true at the atomic level, but pure hydrogen can never be discovered. It always comes in combination with other things. It makes a good energy carrier because of its high inclination to bond with anything in sight. It takes a lot of energy to “break” a substance like natural gas (CH4) into pure H2, with CO2 as a byproduct, in order to produce pure hydrogen for cars. Today, the majority of hydrogen comes from fossil sources like natural gas. When hydrogen is put through a fuel cell, the moment it reacts with oxygen, it immediately returns that energy in the form of electricity. All that emerges from the exhaust pipe is water vapor (H2O).
