The engine is the most difficult problem for all types of rockets, and with the largest and most powerful rocket like SpaceX Starship, the difficulty increases many times over.
Because, unlike any other operational rocket engine, Starship’s Raptor engine runs on a full-flow combustion cycle that is so hard to develop. Not to mention that Raptor is always pushed to its limitations to be better.
So making Raptor reliable is a top priority in helping the vehicle reach orbit.
In Flight 2, we witnessed this component work pretty well, given that 33 Raptor engines on Super heavy booster completed a full-duration burn during ascent and the upper stage’s six Raptors carried the vehicle close to orbit.
However, the failures on Raptor still occurred leading to the explosion in both stages.
This forced SpaceX to devise better solutions to avoid this accident from being repeated in Flight 3.
