Elon Musk REVEALS Major UPGRADES: Starship 2.0 And Starship 3.0
Starship is prepared with upgrades for a future test flight, pending FAA approval. Another agency needs time to assess improvements to Elon Musk’s large rocket after a probe into April’s disastrous test flight was concluded.
While the Federal Aviation Administration and SpaceX have been collaborating closely to permit Starship’s subsequent launch, a necessary environmental evaluation by a different federal agency may cause the vehicle to remain on the ground for several more months.
According to a report from Bloomberg on Monday, the US Fish and Wildlife department has not yet started looking into a new water deluge system that SpaceX planned to use for its subsequent flight. The agency said it has not yet received all the materials it needs to start the review, which may take one to four months, however that it is working with the FAA to finish its portion of the permitting process.
And let’s go over again with these upgrades recently made my SpaceX, before going deeper to what’s next to Starship!
The launch pad and Booster 9 have already undergone the majority of the improvements; these two now just need final regulatory certification.
The transition from Raptor 2 to Raptor 2.1, which uses electric TVC (Thrust Vector Control) instead of the earlier hydraulic system, is the first of several notable modifications between Booster 7 and 9. The booster’s aft two hydraulic power units (HPUs) are therefore removed.
Instead of using hydraulic actuators, Electric TVC moves the 13 raptors in the centre of the booster using electric linear actuators. This offers several advantages. First, SpaceX may eliminate the HPUs that were at the bottom of the launcher, which would reduce weight. Second, electric TVC can enable quicker and smoother gimbaling action while in flight.
Along with the replacement of a large amount of tubing inside the engine bay with wire harnesses, eliminating the requirement for the HPUs contributes to a reduction in complexity and an increase in reliability.
After IFT 1, Booster 9 also had its Raptors and valves replaced. The improvements involved replacing the seals on the methane turbopumps and manifolds to lessen the quantity of methane leakage into the engine compartment. During the first flight test, this led to fires in the engine compartment of B7.
The high pressure Raptor operates at in its Methane turbopumps, hot gas manifold, and the Main Combustion Chamber (MCC) could be one reason SpaceX has a problem with methane leakage compared to other rockets. As a result, the seals are put under increased pressure, which leads to leakage.
The small chines on the side of the booster were removed and swapped out for larger chines that feature enhanced purge tanks in order to help reduce the methane accumulation in the engine compartment.
