Although the Tesla Cybertruck has now entered the tooling stage at the automaker’s Gigafactory in Texas, can it be ready in time for a 2023 delivery? The news will come as a relief to those who reserved the truck and have endured delay after delay. Announced in 2019, the Cybertruck is one of Tesla’s revolutionary creations just like Optimus, the humanoid robot. Despite the wait, Tesla has recorded an impressive volume of pre-orders, which crossed the one million mark last year. When the Cybertruck goes on sale, it will have to compete with the likes of the Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV, and Chevrolet Silverado EV. Chip shortages have caused automakers across the world to make tough decisions. Tesla has had to postpone the Cybertruck’s delivery date multiple times. Rivian, a startup EV manufacturer, had to stop producing the entry-level trim of its R1S SUV and R1T truck. According to a report by Teslarati, the Cybertruck is currently in the tooling stage. This refers to the process of acquiring the necessary components to produce the truck. On Wednesday, Tesla shared its Q3 2022 Shareholder Deck and the Cybertruck was labeled as “Tooling.” Prior to this, it was designated the “In Development” tag. This could lead buyers to believe that the truck will enter production next year, though it’s unclear whether it will be ready for delivery that same year. However, what’s certain is that the truck is set for the early production phase. Tesla is expected to use an IDRA 9,000 Giga Press to make the truck. Interestingly, the machine is believed to have been delivered to the factory on October 7th. Also, some new production systems for the Cybertruck are expected to be sent to Tesla soon. While it may come as a relief to many people that Tesla is finally prepared to build the Cybertruck, delivering finished units in the same year seems like a tall order. Tesla, like any automaker, has been hit hard by disruptions in the supply chain alongside a parts shortage. And while it has managed to deliver units of Models Y, X, S, and 3, new projects like the Cybertruck and Semi have witnessed constant delays. In July, Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggested that the truck could be ready in mid-2023, however, it’s unsure when the parts scarcity will stop impeding the manufacturing process. The Cybertruck will be built in the Tesla Gigafactory which is also where the Model Y is assembled.
