Elon Musk REVEALS Why NASA RETURN To The Moon After 50-YEAR Hiatus!

One of the most momentous days in the history of the space industry was July 20, 1969. After the United States’ success in sending two astronauts to the moon, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin, ten additional astronauts joined throughout the course of the next three years. But, since December 14, 1972, no one has visited it again. Why does it take so long to go back to the moon after prior successful landings there? In today’s video, we’ll explain why NASA abandoned attempts to visit the Moon 53 years after the last successful trip.

The space race between the US and Russia

There was a space competition going on between the US and the Soviet Union. It was a continuation of the nuclear arms race between the US and the Soviet Union that had begun following the Second World War. In the space industry, it was a competition to show who had the best technology.

Rocket development was the pinnacle of this arms race. As a sign of strength, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik 1, in October 1957. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin was successfully launched into space by the Soviet Union. Because they were determined to gain a bigger victory, American leaders started to be concerned about this technology.

For them, one such victory would be to create rockets that could fly higher and faster, or to land the first humans on the moon. President John F. Kennedy recounted the difficulties his administration faced in placing Americans on the moon in 1962. Thus, he made a congressional appeal at a time when the US was lagging behind the USSR in terms of space exploration.

Although it was challenging, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States (NASA) managed to consolidate the necessary equipment by 1966. Ten times greater than its current plan, NASA received around 4.5 percent of the overall Federal budget. With this increase in NASA budget, the Apollo program was able to send a man to the moon in just seven years. Many believe that the space race came to an end because the Americans reached the Moon before the Soviet Union, or Russians. Consequently, it appeared as though there was no longer a struggle worth winning.

For instance, in 2019, Mike Pence, vice president of the National Space Council, spoke about how NASA had informed him that a likely return to the moon would occur in 2028. Casey Dreier, a senior space policy advisor, asserted that “the only reason President John F. Kennedy committed the money to Apollo was his view of the program as a front in the Cold War.” Further, he argued that “no political dispensation will offer the project funds.”

In 1966, NASA launched the first unmanned Apollo mission, after which it launched six further missions that would eventually land 12 people on the moon. While five more Apollo missions made moon landings by 1972, the first mission was launched successfully in July 1969. Unquestionably, this successful mission continues to rank among, if not the top technological achievements of NASA. The astronauts engaged in research that produced fresh scientific understandings of the space industry during this Mission.
