Elon Musk Says 2nd Starship Test Flight COUNTDOWN Starts Now!

Starship is ready to launch for the second time ever. Finally, the company plans to launch on Friday, November 17. A license for the second launch of SpaceX’s next-generation spacecraft, Starship, has been granted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States today, November 15. “The FAA has given license authorization for the second launch of the SpaceX Starship Super Heavy vehicle,” the FAA said this afternoon in an email. “The FAA said SpaceX met all of its responsibilities in terms of safety, the environment, policy, and financial responsibility.”

The launch will happen on Friday, November 17, from Starbase, a SpaceX site in South Texas. There is a two-hour window that starts at 8 a.m. EST (1300 GMT; 7 a.m. local time in Texas) for the launch. Thanks to SpaceX, you can watch it live at Space.com.

Starship has a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and an upper-stage spaceship called Starship, which is a bit of a challenge. Both of these parts are made to be fully and quickly re-used. Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, has long wanted to live on Mars. The company thinks that this vehicle will make that dream a reality in the near future.

Spaceship Starship is almost 400 feet (122 meters) tall when it is fully stacked. There has never been a bigger or stronger rocket built.

One real flight has been done by Starship. It took off from Starbase on April 20 for a test flight. SpaceX planned for the top stage to go around the Earth twice and land it in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. But Starship had a lot of problems soon after it took off. For example, its two stages wouldn’t separate, and the vehicle was intentionally destroyed high above the Gulf of Mexico.

Parts of Starbase were also damaged by the launch. A hole was blown out under the facility’s orbital launch mount, and pieces of concrete and other debris flew around the area.

To make sure this kind of damage doesn’t happen again, SpaceX put in a water-deluge system under the orbital launch mount. This is a strengthened steel plate that shoots out an enormous amount of water to neutralize the superheated and powerful 33 Raptor engines.

Before the beginning of September, the FAA was done looking into what happened with the flight on April 20. The agency then said on Oct. 31 that it had finished a safety review of the second Starship flight, which looked at any risks to public health and property that the launch might pose.

Before Starship could take off again, there was one more thing that had to be done to meet new rules.

On Oct. 31, the FAA said in an email, “The FAA is continuing to work on the environmental review.” FAA is in discussions with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) about an updated Endangered Species Act Biological Assessment as part of its environmental study. Before the environmental review part of the license review is finished, the FAA and the USFWS must wrap up this input.
