On November 18, SpaceX’s Starship rocket, an impressive steel giant standing over 120 meters tall and recognized as the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, embarked on a journey over the South Texas coast. However, the mission concluded with the rocket exploding in space at an approximate altitude of 148 kilometers, somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico.
Despite the explosive outcome, SpaceX deems the flight a success, citing that it surpassed milestones established during the rocket’s first test flight in April, which ended in self-destruction at an altitude of 39 kilometers. During this recent mission, Starship’s upper stage ignited less than 3 minutes after launch and separated while some of the booster’s 33 engines were still active—an achievement referred to as “hot staging,” marking a significant advancement.
Following the separation, the booster changed its course and experienced an explosion, described by the company as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly.” Subsequently, as the upper stage prepared to coast in space around Earth, an automated safety system initiated the destruction of the vehicle after detecting an anomaly.
While the explosion marked the end of the mission, SpaceX views the test as valuable progress, pushing the boundaries of Starship’s capabilities and informing future developments and improvements. Approaching the next integrated flight test of Starship, SpaceX is actively working on significant upgrades to the orbital tank farm and nearing completion of Booster 10.
