Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, has stated that the company has the potential to successfully land a spacecraft on Mars within the next three to four years.
At the International Astronautical Congress in Azerbaijan, which took place in October, Musk made an appearance via videoconference. During his appearance, he shared multiple details regarding the development of Starship, a massive rocket that SpaceX is working on.

The president of the International Astronautical Federation, Clay Mowry, was present for a question-and-answer session that lasted for one hour. During the event, Musk stated, “I think it’s sort of feasible within the next four years to do an uncrewed test landing there.”
In the field of space travel, Musk and SpaceX have a proven track record of making significant advancements. As part of this, SpaceX’s current Falcon 9 rockets will be able to perform routine landings and reuse their booster stages. Since the beginning of this year, the company has launched more than ninety times.
On the other hand, Musk has a track record of taking significantly more time than anticipated to accomplish his objectives.
At the International Astronautical Congress held in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2016, Musk made his Mars rocket debut, followed by the unveiling of an even more massive rocket known as the Interplanetary Transport System. The first unmanned landing on Mars by SpaceX was expected to take place in 2024, and the first mission with people on board was expected to take place in 2025, according to his prediction.
Up to this point, there have been two test flights of the Starship, which took place in April and November respectively. It is possible that the third flight test may take place before the end of this year.
Musk is no longer projecting that people would arrive on Mars in the year 2025; however, he does have other technologically ambitious projections for Starship that will be made next year. The Super Heavy booster of the rocket will not only return to its launch site, but it will also hover about the ground as two arms on the launch tower catch it in midair. This is part of SpaceX’s goal to facilitate a rapid turnaround between missions. When the upper stage of the Starship returns from orbit, the same maneuver would be employed as well.
Musk stated that there was a “reasonable chance” of capturing a rocket within the next year and potentially a Starship from orbit before the end of next year.
According to Musk, SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink satellites could begin to launch next year on expendable variants of the Starship stage that are not reused.
Meanwhile, with the successful landing of the Zhurong rover on Mars in 2021, China’s space program made a significant advancement. This marked the first time that China had successfully landed a spacecraft on another planet.
