The space scientist, Elon Musk who is leading the space tech is popular for his inventions inn all fields of technology. He knows how to make headlines and this time he has managed to shock the scientists with the SpaceX Raptor Engine. The much talked about SpaceX project Starship is rumored to be launched in early 2023 and the reason for the delay has been majorly its raptor engines. Recently Elon Musk tweeted about the second version of the Starship engine Raptor 2!
What is so shocking about this recent development? Does this mean that Starship is close to its launch?
So, What is Raptor? The high-performance lower and upper stages of the Starship rocket, which is headed for Mars, will be propelled by the SpaceX Raptor cryogenic staged combustion rocket engine. So basically Raptor is the engine. It moves away from a kerosene-based propellant and has more than three times the thrust of SpaceX’s Merlin 1D engines, which power the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets. Raptor uses a Full-Flow Staged Combustion Cycle to burn a mixture of liquid methane and liquid oxygen for fuel.
The highly reusable engine makes use of technologies first seen on the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, such as deep cryogenics, which are materials that have been cooled below their boiling point to increase their density and allow for a greater mass of propellant to be packed into a smaller tank volume.
Raptor will be available in, at least two versions, similar to SpaceX’s Merlin engines. One will be used as the first stage booster of the Starship launch vehicle, and the other is vacuum-optimized for use during the interplanetary insertion and retro propulsion prior to landing on Mars.
At SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas this week, Musk unveiled a batch of the new Raptor 2 engines that will be used on the Starship megarocket’s inaugural orbital flight later this year.
