Elon Musk’s Optimus Humanoid Robot Is Now Ready!

In an effort to draw in more customers and boost sales, Tesla’s humanoid robot, known as Optimus, was placed on display last week at one of the company’s storefronts in New York City. Bt, what is the Tesla bot and why is it important? Let’s find out in today’s episode!

Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot design was basically a human within a robot suit when it was initially revealed in 2021. Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla, unveiled two humanoid robot prototypes in 2022, both of which were quite genuine.

At Tesla AI Day 2022, the first, Bumble C, approached the podium as if it were attempting to avoid waking a sleeping child. Musk told the audience that day on stage was the first time Bumble C has ever walked without a cord, though he and his team didn’t want to take the chance of Bumble C falling on its face. Of course, the robot could do more, Musk noted.

The actual star of the show, though, was Optimus, who was first seen dressed as a contemporary version of a medieval knight. It was pushed out onto the stage because it was unable to walk, where it waved to the crowd and performed a quick dance move while perched on a stand. The prototype design, according to Musk, is “fairly close” to the final product. Likewise he claimed that it would one day benefit numerous people and assist millions of people.

While he was impressed with what Tesla engineers were able to accomplish in a year, Alexander Kernbaum, interim director of SRI International’s Robotics Laboratory, the research center that created the humanoid robot Proxi, told Built In that he was somewhat let down by the Bumble C and Optimus demonstrations.

He said that it appeared that the “off-the-shelf” technology used by Bumble C, the robot that actually walked, was intended to give the controls team a head start. However, given the difficulty and length of time required to debug hardware, it is not surprising that the more recent prototype, Optimus, didn’t function properly.

The prototypes are not as amazing in terms of movement as other humanoid robots from the likes of other companies, like Boston Dynamics, that can conduct parkour, according to Carlotta Berry, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana.

Tesla’s Humanoid Robot: What is Known About It

About the humanoid robot being developed by Tesla, we don’t know a lot, including when it will be sold. However, we already know it’s a robot, which is perhaps the most crucial fact at this time.

At the presentation in September 2022, Musk dropped a few hints, telling the audience that the Tesla robot “is designed to be an extremely capable robot” with production units possibly in the millions. The public would also be able to purchase it for a reasonable price between 2025 and 2027.

At the ceremony, Musk remarked, “It is expected to cost much less than a car.” During the occasion, he also said, “Within three to five years, you could probably receive an Optimus.”
