Elon Musk is the chief executive officer of both Space Exploration Technologies and Tesla. However, SpaceX is thriving, whereas Tesla has shriveled since the CEO started his takeover of Twitter. Some even contend that this is due to, rather than a result of, its CEO playing a less active role.
With a goal of up to 100 flights, SpaceX is getting ready for a landmark year. Compared to the every-six-days pace the corporation achieved in 2022, this rate of one every three and a half days is faster.
It will undertake the first-ever commercial spacewalk as early as March, with astronauts dangling from a Dragon craft some 700 kilometers above Earth. And it will soon attempt to enter orbit for the first time using what it claims is the most powerful rocket ever: Starship, the launch vehicle meant to one day reach the moon and Mars.
The privately held business, which was reportedly valued at about $140 billion, has been preparing for all of this activity, with its less visible CEO giving more authority to Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX. According to current and former employees who asked to remain anonymous, since concluding his purchase of Twitter in late October, Musk has been preoccupied with resolving engineering and operational problems at the San Francisco-based social media company, which has reduced his involvement in day-to-day matters at SpaceX.
According to many, Musk played a significantly larger role in establishing the company’s long-term strategy, which included its mission to Mars. The work flow for Falcon 9 launches, for example, has become pretty consistent over the years, so they claim the CEO’s constant attention is not required. They also claim that when Musk’s attention is diverted, there is some semblance of calm.
Former employees claim that Musk has injected himself into projects and requested revisions for often arbitrary reasons as a result of his intense concentration on day-to-day business operations.
For example, current and former employees cite instances in which Musk criticized gear for having too many tubes, connectors, or wires or for generally not adhering to his chosen design style. He has pushed for system redesign and simplification, which has forced staff to spend time explaining why particular components are necessary or prompted extensive work that may take weeks to complete. When components that were initially discarded are ultimately required for the final design, that effort may occasionally have to be reversed.
When Musk shifts his attention to SpaceX, the company, according to a former employee, may occasionally experience hiring freezes because he will want final say on all new hires. For instance, a number of former employees claim that Musk decided the company needed to reduce production at the end of 2021 because there were too many people.
