Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship’s 2nd Flight Test (IFT-2) EXPLAINED!
The most powerful rocket ever constructed, SpaceX’s massive Super Heavy-Starship, launched on its second test flight on Saturday. Although the mission’s initial stages proceeded without a hitch, the first stage of the mission broke apart just moments after separating from the Starship upper stage. Likewise, as it got closer to space, the Starship blew itself up after just few minutes. What happened? What was proven working and what went wrong? Let’s find out all the details in today’s episode!

SpaceX made a big advancement early on Saturday with the second Integrated Flight Test (IFT-2) of a combined Super Heavy/Starship combo out of the coastal Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, despite experiencing what it metaphorically describes as a “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly” (RUD) of booster and ship. The massive 394-foot-tall (120-meter) rocket, with a peak thrust of 16.7 million pounds (7.5 million kilograms), became the most powerful orbital-class rocket ever launched at 7:03 a.m. CST.
In comparison to the IFT1 attempt on April 20, this flight featured the successful burning of all 33 Raptor engines at the base of the 233-foot-long (71-meter) Super Heavy through to Main Engine Cutoff (MECO), a successful “hot-staging” exercise in which the booster was discarded and a flip manoeuvre was executed, and a nearly successful burn profile of the six Raptors on the 164-foot-long (50-meter) Starship itself. As the stack was heading out over the Gulf of Mexico, the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) sent out a destruct command for reasons that are yet unknown.
SpaceX tweeted, “Starship made it through stage separation and successfully lifted off under the power of all 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster.” As the Starship’s engines continued to function for several minutes as it travelled into space, the booster underwent an abrupt and quick dismantling soon after stage separation.
The Starship/Super Heavy broke previous records for the highest liftoff impulse of any booster in history on its first launch in April, significantly outperforming the 8.8 million pounds (3.9 million kilograms) of the Space Launch System (SLS) on the Artemis I mission last November, the 7.5 million pounds (3.4 million kilograms) of the long-retired Saturn V, and even the Soviet Union’s N-1 rocket, which reportedly produced 10.2 million pounds (4.6 million kilograms) on each of its four unsuccessful launch attempts between February 1969 and November 1972. Despite clearing the Boca Chica launch pad and reaching altitude, IFT1 experienced several technical issues that ultimately led to its premature—yet strikingly beautiful—end.
The gigantic aircraft was remotely destroyed by the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) at a height of approximately 24 miles (39 kilometres) after experiencing multiple engine failures shortly after the liftoff on April 20. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was expected to conduct an investigation into the incident, which took several months to finish.
