With the revamping of its website, Starlink has expanded its role as a provider of telecommunications services and positioned itself as a potential partner with other carriers as a standard roaming partner. This was accomplished by increasing the coverage of the cellphone networks of its space-based telecom towers. Starlink Direct to Cell is a service that provides internet, voice, and data services for smartphones that are equipped with LTE connectivity.
The plan of the company is to begin with a text messaging service this year, and then to proceed to complete its offering by incorporating voice, data, and Internet of Things services in the year 2025. All of this will be accomplished without the need to make any alterations to the handsets or equipment employed by the company.
This move sheds light on the future of Starlink’s network, which is getting bigger and bigger as it upgrades its satellites from version 1 to version 2, with the current version, V2 mini, still designed to fit on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets and the next larger version, V2, set to launch once they start using the much larger Starship rockets on a regular basis.
The satellite launches that are carried out by Starlink are utilized by SpaceX as a means of increasing the number of lift-offs and filling the capacity of its rockets. This is essential in order to obtain the economies of scale that are fundamental to the development of the company’s strategy. Only a company that carries out dozens of launches each year is able to plan and create rockets with reusable components, or continue to reduce costs. Due to the fact that it contributes to those essential economies of scale and reduces prices to the point where it becomes the cheapest provider of orbital launch or space transportation services by several orders of magnitude, Starlink is an essential component of the SpaceX project.
And so, what Is Starlink’s Direct To Cell Service?
The Direct to Cell service offered by Starlink makes use of satellites that are equipped with specialized characteristics in order to enable access to texting, calling, and browsing skills in a variety of locales, including both land and coastal areas.
This means that it is compatible with all 4G and 5G devices because it is compatible with existing LTE phones and does not require any new hardware or applications.
This technology also connects Internet of Things devices by utilizing common LTE protocols, expanding its utility beyond just personal communication. There is a good chance that this technology is driven by the technology that SpaceX acquired when it purchased Swarm in 2021.
