Board members of a Universal-backed government entity selected Elon Musk’s tunnel company to build a transit network under Epic Universe, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure Wednesday.
The network aims to connect the parks with hotels and major area attractions, including International Drive.
Three companies submitted bids. The Boring Company was the only one to propose an underground system, which the Shingle Creek Transit and Utility district board members indicated they preferred in their proposal request.
It’s unclear how long this phased project will take or whether it will ever get off the ground. Tunnels are extremely rare in Florida due to a number of engineering and environmental factors. There will also be permitting issues since it will cross underneath major highways.
