According to Elon Musk, the solar flare that erupted on September 16 from sunspot AR3098 was an M8-class, which means it was almost as powerful as an X-flare, the strongest sort.
The radio blackout was classified as an “intermediate” category R2 occurrence by the UK Met Office Space Weather section (R1 is small, while R5 is extreme).
A coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun’s coronasphere, a shell of million-degree plasma that extends millions of kilometers from the sun’s surface, is thought to be possible in conjunction with the solar flare, according to experts in space weather. The Met and other space weather forecasters predict that the CME could lead to G1-level (small) geomagnetic instability during the next few days, which would have a little influence on satellite operations and weak power grid oscillations.
However, if our reliance on technology and satellites, which are less shielded from solar activity, grows, such occurrences could be dangerous.
This was made clear on February 4 when 38 of SpaceX’s “Starlink” satellites started to fall out of the sky as a result of a “small” G1-class geomagnetic storm. After 2023, 40 countries will be able to access the internet using SpaceX’s Starlink constellation of satellites, which will also offer international mobile phone service, Musk stated.
A geomagnetic storm and CME were brought on by an M1-class solar outburst. How a supposedly “small” storm may cause such substantial damage is described in a report that was published in the Space Weather magazine.
Tong Dang, the primary author from China’s University of Science and Technology, said that even though the storm was just “small,” it still injected over 1200 gigawatts of energy into the Earth’s atmosphere. The satellites’ aerodynamic drag was significantly increased as a result of the additional energy heating the upper atmosphere of Earth.
Just a fifth of the 49 Starlink satellites that were crammed inside the Falcon 9 rocket and launched on February 3 survived. The undertaking received a boost last week when SpaceX successfully launched a second Falcon 9 rocket carrying fresh Starlink satellites, Musk explained.
In an effort to lessen the atmospheric influences that contributed to the Starlink snafu earlier this year, the satellites will be placed in a higher orbit.
