“For those who really care about not just the humans but all the life on Earth, it is very important essential that over the long term that we become a multi-planet species and ultimately even go beyond the solar system and bring life with us.”
For decades, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk had been insisting that humanity’s best shot at long-term survival was to eventually become a multi-planetary species. He cited elevated levels of carbon pooling in the Earth’s atmosphere, extreme droughts, and the loss of biodiversity as precursors to a looming catastrophe.
“There’s always some chance that something could go wrong on Earth. The dinosaurs are not around anymore. So, you know, we could there could be some calamity that we where we do ourselves in or there’s just a there’s a natural disaster. Now I’m naturally an optimist, so I think the probability of that is low but it is not zero.”
As a result, Musk and his team began development on a program called Starship in 2016, which was intended to ferry cargo and, eventually, one hundred passengers between the Earth, Moon, and Mars.
The ship is designed to support all of SpaceX’s current missions while also paving the way for Musk’s biggest ambitious goal.
According to Musk, “Starship is capable of doing that it’s capable of getting a million tons the surface of mars and creating a self-sustaining city.”
But building an off-planet living environment has never been easy!
Over the last century, everything we’ve learned about Mars suggests that the planet was once quite capable of hosting ecosystems—and that it might still be an incubator for microbial life today but there’s an undeniable fact, its environment is very harsh!
Mars is the fourth rock from the sun, just after Earth. It is just a smidge more than half of Earth’s size, with gravity only 38 percent that of Earth’s. It takes longer than Earth to complete a full orbit around the sun—but it rotates around its axis at roughly the same speed. That’s why one year on Mars lasts for 687 Earth days, while a day on Mars is just 40 minutes longer than on Earth.
