JUST IN! SpaceX LIFTED B9 on upgraded Launch mount, Static Fire incoming, S27 Scraped and 28 Moved!
Well, remember the devastation of the launch pad after Ship 24 and B7 lifted off and their bright explosion in the sky over Texas??
So, it’s a truly impressive engineering feat, and a colossal effort by SpaceX engineers to bring SpaceX’s next Starship orbital test flight closer than ever.
Everything started earlier Thursday morning.
Booster 9 on SPMTs rolled down Highway 4, met up with Ship 25 on the way and finally reached the Launch site.
Just around an hour, after arriving at the orbital launch site, B9 is nestled safely between the chopsticks!
SpaceX’s two giant arms attached to the pad’s launch tower plan to lift the ~70- meter tall rocket onto the launch mount.
While Musk says that the ultimate goal is to use those arms to catch Starship and Super Heavy out of mid-air, their current purpose is to take the place of the tall and unwieldy crane that would otherwise need to be used to lift either stage.
The arms are an extremely complex solution but they do allow SpaceX to lift, install, and remove Starship stages remotely and insulate those processes from wind conditions, which cranes are sensitive to.
Sadly, this time, there seemed to be something wrong with Mechazilla, the engineers were not able to immediately lift the B9 to position.
