SpaceX has been flying rockets into orbit for more than a decade, but Starship is the company’s most complicated effort yet.
When Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, talks about Starship, he mostly talks about human exploration: Make humans a multiplanetary species by establishing bases on Mars, Save humanity from extinction.
Musk said “A starship will be an incredible scientific enabler. Full reusability and a high production rate drive an order of magnitude increase in $/kg to orbit and beyond. Because the primary user of this rocket is the next-generation Starlink constellation, science does not need to cover fixed costs.”
The way Musk talks, a future filled with Starships seems imminent. But SpaceX faces some significant obstacles, not all technical.
Starbase, the first choice for Starship launch, gets stuck with the FAA.
Meanwhile, Florida’s backup option is also facing a series of barriers from NASA.
Concerned about the launch of SpaceX’s Starship rocket in Florida could damage the space agency’s launch infrastructure, NASA wants SpaceX to ensure that the plan for the Starship rocket launch will not put important property at risk or “No Starship launch in Florida”.
What the hell is going on here?
